Actor-Politician Raj Babbar Gets 2 Yrs Jail Term in 1996 Assault Case
Guwahati: Raj Babbar, a former actor who is now a politician, was given a two-year prison sentence in connection with the attack of a polling official. The election official filed the FIR in Wazirganj police station on May 2, 1996.
The Congress politician was also given a Rs 8,500 punishments by the court. Babbar was found guilty of violence and obstructing official business.

Raj Babbar was running for office from Lucknow at the time and was a member of the Samajwadi Party.
A verbal altercation between the two during the election period started the assault. He was convicted of assaulting a government official in the run-up to the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, but was released on bail.
Raj Babbar and Arvind Yadav were the subjects of a police report alleging violations of sections 143, 332, 353, 323, 504, and 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The charge sheet was submitted to the court under the Criminal Law Amendment Act in addition to the Representation of the People Act.
He was found guilty of three more offences in addition to intentionally hurting someone to prevent them from carrying out their official duties.
