African Swine Fever Outbreak Hits Thizama Village in Nagaland, Authorities Take Swift Action
Northeast Desk, 30th August: African Swine Fever (ASF) has been detected in Thizama Village, located in the Chiephobozou block of Kohima district, prompting an urgent response from local authorities.
Kumar Ramnikant, Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, has implemented strict measures to control the outbreak. A 1 km radius around Thizama Village has been designated an infected zone, with a 10 km radius surrounding it set as a surveillance zone to monitor the disease’s spread.
To prevent further transmission, a comprehensive ban has been enforced on the slaughter, import, and export of pigs and piglets within the affected region. Residents have been advised to comply with these restrictions to contain the outbreak effectively.
The situation is exacerbated by a similar ASF outbreak in Mizoram, where over 10,050 pigs have died and more than 18,300 have been culled since February. The epidemic has caused substantial financial losses for local farmers, estimated between Rs 23 to 25 crore. Although recent death rates have decreased, the disease continues to affect multiple districts.
ASF is a highly contagious disease that severely impacts pig populations but does not pose a threat to human health. The outbreak often coincides with warming climates and pre-monsoon rains, making it a significant challenge for affected regions.
