AFSPA Extended for Six Months in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh

Northeast Desk, 26th September: The Union Home Ministry has announced the extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for another six months in several regions of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, citing ongoing security concerns. The act, which grants extensive powers to the armed forces, will remain in force in eight districts of Nagaland, three districts of Arunachal Pradesh, and specific police jurisdictions within both states.

The affected districts in Nagaland include Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren. Additionally, 21 police stations in other districts like Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, Wokha, and Zunheboto have been marked as ‘disturbed areas.’

In Arunachal Pradesh, the extension applies to Tirap, Changlang, Longding, and the Namsai district, covering Namsai, Mahadevpur, and Chowkham police stations. The notification is effective from October 1, 2024.

AFSPA grants the armed forces the authority to conduct searches, arrests, and use force, including opening fire if deemed necessary, to maintain public order. The decision comes amid ongoing concerns about stability in these regions, despite criticisms over the act’s implications for civil liberties. The central government has reiterated the need for continued military presence to ensure peace and stability.
