Agnipath Scheme: 20% Agniveers in Indian Navy will be women
Guwahati: For the first time ever, the military is hiring women to serve as sailors in the new Agnipath recruitment scheme who will also be deployed on warships in accordance with operational requirements.
Around 10,000 women enrolled through it within three days of the internet portal’s launch.
The government is currently setting up facilities at INS Chilka to train women sailors as well.
According to reports, Navy officials said: “The Navy’s Agnipath programme will be gender-neutral. Thirty female officers are now at sea on front-line warships. We have determined that the moment has arrived to hire women as sailors and in all other professions that will employ women at sea.”
The government had previously announced that 46,000 Agniveers will be hired this year. In order to meet upcoming difficulties, it had been said that the Armed Forces will have “a younger, fitter, varied profile.”
