AGP’s Atul Bora Flags Strategic Importance of 2025 Amid Gains in Panchayat Polls, Eyes BTR Elections

Guwahati: Assam Cabinet Minister and senior Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Atul Bora on Sunday highlighted 2025 as a pivotal year for the party, with a focus on strengthening its foothold ahead of the autonomous council elections, particularly the critical Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) polls. His remarks followed a key meeting of the AGP central committee where the party’s performance and roadmap were closely reviewed.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Bora underscored the AGP’s impressive performance in the recently concluded panchayat elections, where the party secured victories in 27 Zila Parishads and 187 Anchalik Parishads. He described the results as a strong indicator of the AGP’s renewed grassroots strength, adding that the momentum must now be directed towards further organizational consolidation.

Bora also highlighted a significant shift in voter dynamics, revealing that the AGP had made successful inroads into constituencies historically dominated by the Congress, particularly by gaining the support of religious minority voters. This, he said, was a clear sign of the party’s growing appeal across a wider demographic. “We have made substantial advances in areas once considered Congress bastions,” Bora noted.

With the BTR elections on the horizon, Bora confirmed that the AGP will contest and initiate discussions with its ally, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), to develop a joint strategy. He acknowledged that while the BJP—AGP’s partner in the ruling coalition—has announced plans to contest independently in BTR, AGP will chart its own path in close coordination with UPPL. “We will certainly contest the BTR elections, and strategic talks with UPPL will be held soon,” he stated.

Taking a sharp dig at the Congress, Bora said the opposition party was in a state of irreversible decline. “Congress is declining from zero to absolute zero. People now recognize the difference made by real, visible development under the current leadership,” he remarked, reinforcing the AGP’s confidence as it heads into a year of high electoral stakes.
