Agricultural Crisis in Assam’s Bajali: Cracked Fields and Failed Irrigation Systems

Guwahati, September 23: Farmers in Bajali are facing a severe agricultural crisis as several fields develop cracks and lands remain parched due to prolonged water shortages. The dysfunctional irrigation systems in areas like Halongbari, Kathalmurighat, and Digjira have exacerbated the situation, leaving farmers struggling to save their crops.

Despite the presence of irrigation infrastructure, farmers report a complete lack of water for their paddy fields, the primary source of their livelihood. Vast stretches of farmland are devastated, with this season’s paddy crops wasted, leaving many families without a means to recover their losses.

The failed irrigation system at Kathalmurighat, once a vital lifeline, now stands as a symbol of neglect, with locals claiming they have never received a drop of water from the canal. Allegations of government negligence have intensified frustration, as residents note that officials in the irrigation department continue to receive salaries despite the system’s complete breakdown.
