Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections, Meghalaya tightens border security; contraband worth Rs 37.45 crore seized

Northeast Desk, 4th April: Meghalaya has taken proactive measures to fortify its border security with Assam and Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. A total of 187 polling stations have been set up along the interstate border with Assam, while 140 polling stations have been established along the international border with Bangladesh. This move comes amidst concerns of potential illicit activities influencing the electoral process.

B.D.R. Tiwari, the chief electoral officer of Meghalaya, highlighted the significant seizure of assets prior to and after the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the Lok Sabha election. The total seizure amounted to Rs. 33.45 crores before the MCC announcement, which decreased to Rs. 4.06 crores afterward. Dr. Tiwari clarified that the current total seizure stands at Rs. 37.45 crores, encompassing cash, liquor, drugs, and other freebies.

Dr. Tiwari further elaborated on the security measures undertaken, emphasizing the establishment of polling stations along the borders with Assam and Bangladesh. Additionally, 164 polling stations require polling parties to traverse through Assam, with prior discussions held in a Chief Secretaries meeting between Assam and Meghalaya to ensure smooth elections. The involvement of state and central agencies, deployment of Flying Squads and Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs), and intensified checking at checkpoints further reinforce security measures.

The collaborative efforts of Meghalaya’s electoral machinery and law enforcement agencies aim to prevent any illicit activities that may compromise the integrity of the electoral process. These measures underscore the commitment to conducting fair and transparent elections in the region.
