Ahead Of Meghalaya Assembly Elections, Separate Garoland Demand Gains Momentum

Guwahati: The desire for a separate Garoland gathered steam once more in the run-up to the Meghalaya assembly elections.

According to reports, a group of delegates and members of the Garoland State Movement Committee would present their demands in the National capital, Delhi.

Reportedly, the Garoland State Movement Committee will hold a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

Speaking to the media, the chairman of the Garoland State Movement Committee said, “We are currently in Tura and will be heading to Guwahati, from where we shall move to Delhi.”

Notably, on December 14 and 15, a two-day programme will be held in the nation’s capital.

Delegates from more than half a dozen states, including Garo Hills, had planned to march in New Delhi for two days in December earlier this year, urging lawmakers to take note of their long-standing demand.

The voices of dozens of people who long for their own identity and state will soon be heard by the members of the Indian Parliament.

This decision was taken on October 29 in Tura when representatives of several state demand committees had travelled to attend the Garoland demonstration, in front of a crowd of hundreds of Garoland supporters.

“Delegations from Garoland, Gorkhaland, Bundelkhand, Ladakh, Vidharbha, Bodoland, Karbi Anglong and Tipraland Tripura will head to Delhi during December’s Winter Session of Parliament. We will stage a rally for two days to remind the leadership of India about the demands of the people which are genuine and a constitutional demand guaranteed in the Constitution of India,” announced Dr Munish Tamang, President of the National Federation for New States (NFNS) representing Gorkhaland in North Bengal who marched together with Nikman Ch Marak, the NFNS vice president and long time advocate for Garoland.
