AICC Secretary Christopher Tilak Slams BJP Over Alleged Merger Narrative in Sikkim

Gangtok: During his second visit to Sikkim, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Christopher Tilak criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly pushing a controversial narrative to merge the state with Darjeeling.

Tilak expressed strong concerns, asserting that such a move threatens Sikkim’s unique constitutional protections under Article 371F, which provides special provisions safeguarding the state’s distinct identity and interests.

At a press conference, Tilak remarked, “The BJP government is diverting attention from Sikkim’s real developmental issues by focusing on a merger with Darjeeling. This is a direct threat to Article 371F and the rights of Sikkim’s people.” He also warned that such a merger could lead to Sikkim’s population becoming a minority when compared to Darjeeling, a proposal allegedly supported by the Gorkha Rashtriya Party.

Tilak accused the BJP of exploiting regional sentiments, which he said has sown confusion and unrest in both regions. He also pointed to the BJP’s alleged neglect of critical development issues such as job creation, economic growth, and infrastructure in Sikkim, stating that these should be the focus for securing the state’s future.

The Congress leader emphasized his party’s commitment to campaigning for Sikkim’s progress and educating the youth and women about the risks posed by such political strategies. He pledged that Congress would work to protect the state’s interests and preserve its constitutional safeguards.
