AIUDF Chief Demands Rs 1 Lakh Crore for Assam Floods and Increased Support for Minorities

Guwahati, July 25: Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, chief of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has submitted a memorandum to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman demanding substantial financial aid to address Assam’s flood crisis and enhance support for minorities.

Ajmal’s memorandum requests Rs 1 lakh crore to tackle the long-standing flood issues in Assam, which have plagued the state for 75 years. This year alone, floods have devastated 29 districts, causing significant loss of life and property. “In her recent budget speech, Union Minister Sitharaman mentioned allocating funds for Assam’s flood and erosion problems. Given the persistent devastation over decades, we urgently need Rs 1 lakh crore. The people of Assam will be deeply grateful for this support,” Ajmal stated.

In addition to flood relief, Ajmal has called for an increase in the budget for minority welfare from Rs 3100 crore to Rs 5000 crore. He argued that this additional funding is necessary to support various initiatives, including ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao,’ and to provide educational resources such as laptops for minority children.

Ajmal also criticized the Assam government’s handling of the recent flood crisis in Dhubri, alleging that 90% of the affected areas have not received adequate relief materials. He described the state government’s response as inadequate and accused it of neglecting the flood victims.

The flood situation in Assam continues to escalate, with over 90 fatalities reported and more than 5 lakh people affected across 18 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The district of Cachar is particularly hard-hit by the ongoing deluge.
