AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam Arrested Over Communal Remarks Linking Pahalgam and Pulwama Attacks to BJP

Guwahati: In a politically charged development, Assam Police have arrested Aminul Islam, the AIUDF MLA from Dhing, over incendiary remarks made during a public rally where he controversially linked the recent Pahalgam terror attack and the 2018 Pulwama tragedy to top BJP leaders. The arrest comes amid widespread outrage over Islam’s claims, which accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of politically benefiting from the terror incidents.

Addressing a campaign rally on April 23 ahead of the upcoming Panchayat elections, Islam alleged that the BJP leadership had orchestrated the attacks to manipulate voter sentiment. “If the government fails to bring out the truth, we will be bound to believe that both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah were behind the two attacks,” he stated, triggering condemnation from across the political spectrum.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded sharply, denouncing the remarks as anti-national and hinting at legal consequences. Without naming Islam directly, Sarma criticised those who “speak in favour of Pakistan” and warned that strong action would be taken against anyone inciting communal disharmony. “The Central Government will take strong measures against such anti-national people, no matter what positions they hold,” he asserted.

Islam’s arrest followed mounting public and political pressure, as leaders and citizens alike called for accountability over what they saw as an attempt to communalise national tragedies and question the integrity of India’s security forces. His comments were widely viewed as an attempt to stoke tensions and politicise terrorism for electoral gains.

The arrest also comes against the backdrop of heightened political tensions in Assam, with Sarma earlier criticising Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi for his controversial visit to Pakistan. The Chief Minister alleged Gogoi’s links to the Pakistani establishment and promised a full investigation, escalating the narrative of national security as a key issue in the state’s political discourse.
