AIUDF MLA Mazibur Rahman Backs Assam Muslim Marriage Bill with Conditions, Vows to Oppose Repeal
Guwahati, 22nd August: In a significant political development, AIUDF MLA Mazibur Rahman has offered conditional support for the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024, recently passed by the Assam Government. Rahman stressed the importance of amending certain provisions of the bill, particularly those related to child marriage, to align with community concerns.
Rahman made it clear that while his party supports the bill’s amendment, any attempts by the government to repeal the legislation would be met with strong opposition. “We support the amendment of the bill, but if they want to repeal it, we will protest and fight against this,” Rahman declared.
He also accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of exploiting the bill for communal purposes, while affirming that the AIUDF has no objection to the registration of marriages and divorces, as long as it respects adherence to Muslim law. Rahman’s remarks set the stage for further debate on the controversial bill and the government’s intentions behind it.
