Akhil Gogoi Calls for Unified Regional Party in Assam

Guwahati, 29th May: In a compelling appeal for political unity, Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal founder Akhil Gogoi has reiterated his call for the amalgamation of all regional parties in Assam. Speaking at a recent gathering, Gogoi stressed the importance of creating a single, unified regional party to bolster regionalism and effectively serve the state’s interests.

“Assam needs a singular regional party to truly strengthen regionalism,” said Gogoi. “This has been our proposal since Raijor Dal’s inception, and it remains our stance. The current environment in Assam is not conducive to sustaining multiple regional parties.”

Gogoi pointed out the challenges posed by the fragmentation of regional parties, arguing that the existence of numerous small parties weakens regionalism and impedes collective progress. “Having 10-15 regional parties is unsustainable. To genuinely empower regionalism, unity among these parties is essential. Unfortunately, personal ambitions and goals often prevent this unity. Those who truly want to benefit Assam should prioritize strengthening regionalism.”

He also emphasized the inclusion of tribal and community associations in this unification process to create a more inclusive and representative political landscape. “Raijor Dal advocates for the unification of regional parties, along with tribal associations, under a united front.”

Gogoi outlined a two-step approach to achieve this goal: “First, Raijor Dal and Asom Jatiya Parisad should come together, including other regional parties. Second, after solidifying this unity, they should incorporate tribal and community associations. This is crucial for Assamese society.”

He expressed concern that personal interests could hinder this unification, which he views as vital for the state’s progress. “If personal reasons obstruct this process, it will be unfortunate for Assam,” he added.

However, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi dismissed the possibility of a merger. Akhil Gogoi stated, “Raijor Dal is ready for this merger. The decision now lies with AJP. If they agree, we will form a new political party with a fresh constitution, creating a formidable opposition to the BJP.”

Lurinjyoti Gogoi has instead suggested a common platform for regional parties rather than a full merger. He highlighted the importance of a unified front to provide a better political alternative for Assam, suggesting that collaboration without merging could still achieve their objectives.

The future of Assam’s political landscape remains uncertain as Akhil Gogoi’s call for unification poses a critical decision point for regional parties. Will they unify to form a powerful coalition, or will they choose a more fragmented approach as suggested by Lurinjyoti Gogoi?
