Akhil Gogoi Demands Release of Former NDFB Leader Ranjan Daimary, Calls for Full Implementation of BTR Accord
Guwahati, February 17 – Raijor Dal chief and MLA Akhil Gogoi has called for the immediate release of former National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) leader Ranjan Daimary and other imprisoned NDFB members, urging the government to fulfill its commitments under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Accord.
Addressing the media, Gogoi expressed concerns over the incomplete implementation of the BTR Accord, which was signed to bring lasting peace and autonomy to the Bodoland region. “The government must clarify the timeline for full implementation of the BTR Accord. Several NDFB leaders remain behind bars, despite the agreement. Their release should be prioritized,” he stated.
He further demanded that funds for the Sixth Schedule areas be directly allocated by the Central Government to ensure transparency and efficient development.
The BTR Accord, signed in 2020, aimed to grant greater autonomy and development support to Bodoland, ensuring political stability in the region. However, concerns have been raised regarding the pace of its implementation and the continued incarceration of former insurgent leaders who had surrendered as part of the peace deal.
Gogoi’s statement comes amid renewed political discussions on tribal autonomy, peace accords, and governance reforms in Assam, particularly with the historic Assembly session in Kokrajhar underway. His remarks are likely to intensify the debate over state accountability in post-conflict rehabilitation efforts.
