Akhil Gogoi Granted Temporary Bail by SC In UAPA Case
Guwahati: Sivsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has been granted bail in the UAPA case by the Supreme Court.
National Investigation Academy filed the UAPA complaint against him in connection with the demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
Reports claim that the NIA approached the Supreme Court about the issue.
Gogoi appealed the High Court’s decision to the Supreme Court.
It should be noted that MLA Gogoi will appear Thursday before the High Court.
A bench of Justices V Ramasubramanian and Pankaj Mithal said that the case will be heard on Friday who also ruled that Gogoi not be brought into custody until then.
Gogoi and three other people were booked in connection with protests and remarks against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in December 2019 and alleged ties to Maoist organizations.
They were accused of sedition (section 124A), encouraging hostility between religious groups (section 153A), and making statements against national integration (section 153B) under the Indian Penal Code, among other offences, as well as under various provisions of the Unlawful Prevention Activities Act (UAPA).
