AMCH Gains National Stature, Designated Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases

DIBRUGARH: The Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh has received a significant boost to its standing, having been formally recognised as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Rare Diseases by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. This prestigious designation, announced under the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021, marks a new chapter for healthcare in Assam and the entire Northeast region.

The recognition is a testament to the state’s burgeoning capabilities in medical infrastructure and a reflection of the Assam government’s dedicated efforts to provide specialized, high-end care. According to officials, this achievement highlights the proactive leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose focus on healthcare reform has been a driving force behind such advancements. As a newly christened CoE, AMCH is now tasked with becoming a nodal point for rare diseases, taking on a pivotal role in diagnosis, treatment, and management.

The hospital’s new responsibilities will extend beyond clinical care, encompassing critical functions like research, training of medical professionals, and public awareness initiatives. This is a game-changer for patients with rare conditions, who often face immense challenges in receiving timely and accurate diagnoses. The AMCH is poised to become a beacon of hope, not only for the people of Assam but also for those across the neighbouring states who previously had to travel to distant metro cities for specialised care. This development is expected to significantly advance medical knowledge and support systems for patients battling these complex conditions, cementing AMCH’s position as a leader in regional healthcare.
