Amendments passed for Cattle Preservation Law 2021 to prevent cattle smuggling

Guwahati: With the aim of preserving the cattle from illegal smuggling and slaughter the Assam Government on Thursday has passed several amendments to The Cattle Preservation Bill 2021, just after four months of passing the Act.

The major additions in the Bill include easing cattle transportation for agricultural purposes and ensuring strict punishment for illegal cattle smugglers. The cattle will now be allowed to be slaughtered only in slaughterhouses that are duly licensed and recognized by the government without any exemptions which the principal Act had provided. Where earlier the Act exempted certain places of worship or certain cattle for slaughter other than calf or cows for religious purposes has now been omitted in the new amendment. The amended bill also allows the police to seize and auction the vehicles that were seized for illegal smuggling and also inspect the illegal miscreants. In addition, inter-district movement of cattle will be allowed except for border districts.

The Chief Minister of Assam  Himanta Biswa Sarma also assured that there are no restrictions for cattle rearing for farming purposes and the main motive is to stop the smuggling of cattle, especially in the border areas and no amendment has been passed concerning buffaloes.
