Amid ‘Bakrid’ Assam bans illegal killing of cows, calves, camels

Guwahati: The state administration has created a standard operating procedure (SOP) to stop the illegal killing/sacrifice of cows/calves, camels, and other animals on the occasion of “Bakrid” on July 10, 2022, despite the continuing Qurbani controversy in the state.

The home department has also instructed all district deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to take action against violators of the laws regarding the movement of animals on the occasion of “Bakrid.”

Citing a reference letter from the Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India order regarding stopping of illegal killing/sacrifice of Cows/Calves, Camels and other animals and taking action against the offenders for violation of Transport of Animals Rules on the occasion of ‘Bakrid’, the joint secretary, home and political department has urged the DCs and SPs to look into the matter and take necessary action within their jurisdictional area accordingly.
