Amid COVID fear local bodies bans tourist entry in Sikkim

Local bodies of Sikkim has come forward to ban tourist entry even though Sikkim Government has decided to reopen the state for tourists, both domestic and foreign, from October 10 after a gap of seven months. Sikkim had barred foreign tourists from March 5 and domestic ones from March 17, the first Indian state to do so in the wake of the pandemic. Tourism department has already prepared a draft SOPs and guidelines which just needed a final approval after discussing with health department.

In a latest decision to ban tourist Drupchen Duechi Chorten Gonpa, Deorali has decided not to allow tourists. In an appeal made the monastery committee it says ‘ we all are aware of the present Covid- 19 pandemic situation, hence the monastery committee has decided that no tourists from outside the state are allowed in the monastery till 31st October 2020. However, local people and devotees, who want to offer puja in the monastery are allowed duly maintaining SOP as per Government Directives’.

Similarly, 20-SAKYONG-PENTONG GPU Upper Dzongu, North District bans the entries of Pilgrimage tourists and workers at THOLUNG GUMPA till 30th November 2020 from today. Total two GPUs of Dzongu constituency bans the entry of Tourists for the safety of the Public of concern GPUs from the global Pandemic Covid-19. Hee-Gyathang and Sakyong-Pentong GPUs.

Earlier this week local body of Lachung Dzomsa will not allow tourist till 30 th  November it was decided by meeting of Lachung Dzomsa which was held few days back similalrly, Yuksom will also not open its boudary for tourists till 30th November. Village Administrative Centre 48 Borong GPU, South also banned tourist entry till 30th November 2020, similarlly Gram Prshasan Kendra, 61 Ribdi -Bhareng, West  Sikkim which is famous for Rhododendron has also decided to ban tourist till 30th November 2020 and  Office of The Gram Panchayat, Thingling Khechuperi, West Sikkim will also imposed ban till 30th November 2020.

The tourism department has already issued notification issued a detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) in consultation with the health department for hotels, homestays and other tourism-related services to run from October 10 and onwards but the some. Inner Line Permits for foreign tourists having valid visas shall be issued from 10th October, 2020. The bookings for hotels and homestays complying with the SOP shall start from 27th September, 2020.
