Amid JN.1 spike in India, returnee from Delhi tests COVID-19 positive in Manipur

Northeast Desk, 29th December: In the northeastern state of Manipur, a recent traveler from Delhi via Nagaland has tested positive for COVID-19. The woman, a resident of Paomata in Senapati district, underwent testing and was confirmed positive for the virus.

Her sample has been transported to Imphal and will subsequently be sent to the National Institute of Virology Pune for genome sequencing to determine whether the case involves the JN. 1 variant. The individual had recently returned from Delhi, taking a flight to Dimapur and then traveling to her village by bus from Nagaland City.

Travellers to India are mandated to provide proof of vaccination against diseases like yellow fever and polio. Although there are currently no specific COVID-19 travel restrictions for those coming from Ireland, passengers may undergo medical screening upon arrival. It’s crucial to stay updated on regulations, as they can change rapidly.

The situation in Manipur has been tense due to violent demonstrations, resulting in casualties. Curfews and restrictions persist in parts of the state. For residents and visitors in COVID-19-affected areas, adherence to preventive measures, including hand hygiene, mask-wearing, ventilation, and physical distancing, is recommended. Vaccination remains pivotal in preventing severe illness and limiting the virus’s spread.

This recent case highlights the importance of vigilance and adherence to health guidelines, particularly in regions with inconsistent healthcare facilities. Travelers should also take precautions against water and food-borne diseases and mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria and dengue fever, prevalent in India.

As the global community grapples with the ongoing pandemic, individuals are urged to stay informed about the evolving situation and take necessary steps to safeguard themselves and others from COVID-19.
