Amid Violence in Meghalaya, Protesters Burn Effigies

Guwahati: The Save Hyniewtrep Mission (SHM), a coalition of five NGOs assembled in the capital of Meghalaya, Shillong and organised protests against the killing of at least six persons in the Mukroh firing incident.

In front of the Polo Hills mansion of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the agitating protesters set fire to effigies of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), East Jaintia National Council (EJNC), Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM), Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) and Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP) were among the five organisations that the demonstrators belonged to.

The demonstrators vehemently denounce the purported inability of the governments of the Centre, Meghalaya and Assam to settle the long-running border conflict.

It should be noted that on November 22, after Assam forest workers stopped a truck carrying illegally felled wood, at least six people including an Assam forest guard were killed in a shooting incident along the interstate border.
