Amit Shah Concludes Northeast Visit, Emphasizes Security and Law Enforcement Reforms
Aizawl: Union Home Minister Amit Shah concluded his three-day tour of Assam and Mizoram on March 17, marking a visit that underscored the Centre’s commitment to security and governance in the Northeast.
Before departing for New Delhi, Shah was seen off at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with senior ministers and officials.
Shah’s visit began in Jorhat on Friday, where he stayed overnight at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Golaghat district. During his stay, he inaugurated the academy and laid the foundation stone for its second-phase housing project, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening police infrastructure and training facilities.
On Saturday, he traveled to Mizoram to oversee the relocation of the Assam Rifles establishment from Aizawl to Zokhawsang, a move aimed at improving security and strategic positioning in the state. The relocation, approximately 15 km from Mizoram’s capital, is seen as a significant step in enhancing operational efficiency in the region.
Upon returning to Assam on Sunday, Shah addressed the 57th Annual Conference of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) in Kokrajhar, where he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully implementing the Bodo Accord and fostering lasting peace in Bodoland. Later in the day, he chaired a crucial meeting in Guwahati with chief ministers and directors general of police from northeastern states to evaluate the progress of India’s newly introduced criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
As part of the discussions, Shah launched a book titled New Criminal Laws: Standard Operating Procedures and Rules, compiled by the Assam CID and published by the Assam government. His visit reinforced the Centre’s focus on bolstering law enforcement, modernizing security frameworks, and ensuring the effective implementation of legal reforms across the Northeast.
