Amit Shah Inaugurates Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Assam, Emphasizes Development and Security

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam, on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the state’s law enforcement capabilities. The event also highlighted the legacy of Lachit Barphukan, the legendary Ahom general, whose role in defending Assam against the Mughals was central to his historic recognition.

In his address, Amit Shah praised the growing national recognition of Lachit Barphukan, noting that his biography is now available in 23 languages, making his inspirational story accessible to children across the country. Shah shared his personal connection to Barphukan, recalling his early education about the general at the age of seven and how his influence has now transcended regional borders.

The Home Minister also took the opportunity to contrast the financial support provided to Assam under the Congress and BJP-led governments. Shah pointed out that Assam received a devolution grant of Rs 1.27 lakh crore during the 10-year Congress rule, while under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this amount increased to Rs 4.95 lakh crore, nearly four times more than what was allocated under Congress.

Emphasizing the transformation of Assam, Shah questioned why the Congress had neglected the state, contributing to a lack of peace and prosperity. However, he credited the Modi-led government for restoring peace and development in the region.

The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, a state-of-the-art facility, is expected to significantly enhance policing standards and strengthen internal security in Assam, equipping law enforcement personnel with advanced training and modern facilities.
