Ancient Mylliem Ritual Endures Despite Leadership Gaps, Unites Khasi Community

Shillong, Meghalaya: The ancient and revered Raid Mylliem ritual, a cornerstone of Khasi tradition in Meghalaya, is currently underway from May 24 to 29, demonstrating the unyielding spirit of the community even in the absence of several customary leaders. This year’s observance, though rescheduled, is a vibrant testament to the resilience and cultural pride deeply embedded within the Khasi people.

Led by the dedicated Lyngdoh Myntri Syngteng Nongdhar, the 5 Kur clans, and a host of committed local community members, the ritual continues its six-day journey. Beginning at Mawnarian and culminating at the majestic Lum Shulong (Shillong Peak), the ceremony encompasses a series of sacred rites, culminating in a three-day Traditional Ritual Dance. These time-honoured practices are performed with profound devotion, seeking blessings from the Creator for the safety and well-being of Lei Ryngkew Basa—the land, its people, the Hima, and the essential local governance structure.

Traditionally held in early February, this year’s observance faced organisational hurdles, necessitating the rescheduling. However, the community’s unwavering determination to preserve this ancestral heritage has ensured that the full ceremonial structure remains intact and uninterrupted. The Raid Mylliem ritual stands as a powerful symbol of Meghalaya’s rich cultural tapestry, underscoring the enduring significance of indigenous practices in fostering peace and unity across the region, from Bisi to Bhoi Rymbong. Locals and visitors are warmly invited to witness and participate in these ceremonies that are integral to the spiritual identity of the area.
