Anganwadi Worker Suspended After Two Children Suffer Burn Injuries in Tripura

Northeast Desk, 23rd March: The Tripura government took swift action on March 22, suspending an Anganwadi worker following an unfortunate incident at the Bairagimura Anganwadi Centre in Melaghar, Sepahijala district. Two children sustained critical burn injuries due to an accident involving hot water.

According to an order from the Office of the Child Development Project Officer, Anganwadi Worker Jayalaxmi Sarkar (Debbarma) was suspended after two 5-year-old girls, Punti Debbarma and Hamari Debbarma, suffered severe burns from hot water accidentally thrown on them at the Anganwadi center on March 20, 2024. The injured girls are currently receiving treatment at the burn unit of Agartala Govt. Medical College & Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital.

Effective immediately, Jayalaxmi Sarkar (Debbarma) has been relieved of her duties as an Anganwadi worker due to her involvement in the incident.

Anita Burman, the Sector Supervisor of Telkajla Sector, along with other supervisors, has been directed to visit the Anganwadi Center and engage with parents and members of the Anganwadi Center Management Committee.

The department has initiated a thorough investigation, with a report expected within two days. Additionally, the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education provided immediate financial support of Rs. 30,000 to the affected families.

Minister Tinky Roy and department authorities visited the injured children at the hospital to coordinate with medical staff for their care. Minister Roy has announced further financial assistance for the children from the Department.

An inquiry into the incident aims to prevent such negligence in the future, with strong monitoring by the Anganwadi center management committee to ensure the safety of children under their care.
