Animal Rights Activists Rally Against Stray Dog Shooting in Sikkim
Northeast Desk, 11th August: On August 11, animal rights activists gathered at Zero Point, Sikkim, to protest the shooting of a stray dog on Kazi Road. The rally, organized by Guardian of Sikkim, People for Animals, and Citizens Animal Shelter Sikkim, aimed to raise awareness about animal abuse and demand justice for the dog killed on July 19.
The deceased dog, aged 3-4 years, was initially buried quickly but was later exhumed and confirmed to have been shot. The activists condemned the act as cowardly and emphasized that all forms of life, including animals, deserve respect.
Karma D. Youtso, a founder member of Guardian of Sikkim, criticized the cruelty, stating, “Just because animals cannot speak doesn’t mean they don’t have lives, feelings, and emotions.”
The rally highlighted broader concerns about animal abuse in the region, including poisoning and mistreatment. Activists called for stricter enforcement of animal rights laws and a ban on unlicensed weapons. They also expressed frustration over the lack of transparency in the ongoing investigation, urging updates on its progress.
The protest concluded with a demand for justice and improved protection for animals.
