Another Elephant Killed in Assam
Guwahati: With man-elephant conflicts still being a major issue in the state, on Friday it was reported that an adult elephant was electrocuted after it came in contact with a live electric fence in a paddy field in the Mirza Kamrup district of Assam.
The elephant had come down from the hilly forest areas in search of food and while the jumbo attempted to enter a paddy field in the area, it came into contact with a live electric fence installed around the field.
The locals saw the elephants lying in the field and they immediately informed the police and forest department.
After the preliminary investigation into the death of the jumbo, the Divisional Forest Officer of Kamrup (East), Rohini Ballav Saikia informed that along with detaining two persons, the officials had also seized the electrical wires which were installed around the paddy field.
It may be mentioned that the forest department over the years had been trying to eradicate the man-elephant conflicts in the state, the cases still are being reported almost every now and then. Some experts claimed that one of the major reasons has been the deforestation and habitat loss of the animals.
