Another Haj pilgrim from Assam dies in Mecca, death count rises to 5

Guwahati, 22nd June: In a sorrowful turn of events, another pilgrim from Assam has passed away during the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Mohiuddin, hailing from Burunga in Cachar’s Katigara, died while performing the holy rituals. His death follows closely on the heels of another pilgrim, Jalaluddin Laskar from Gosainpur in Cachar district, who succumbed to a heart attack at Arafat Maidan on June 19.

These incidents are part of a series of tragic losses among Assamese pilgrims during this year’s Hajj. Just days earlier, three other pilgrims from Assam succumbed to a severe heatwave in Mecca on June 17. Among them was 54-year-old Zarina Begum from Howly in Lower Assam’s Barpeta district. Begum, who traveled with her husband Abul Hussain on May 18, fell critically ill due to the extreme temperatures. Despite being hospitalized, she could not be saved.

The severe heatwave has posed significant health risks to the millions of pilgrims participating in the annual Islamic pilgrimage. Local authorities have issued multiple advisories urging pilgrims to take necessary precautions against the soaring temperatures.

Zarina Begum’s funeral prayers are set to be conducted in Mecca as per her husband’s wishes. Abul Hussain, who conveyed the heart-wrenching news to their family in Barpeta, remains in Mecca to oversee the final rites.

The tragic deaths of Laskar, Begum, and now Mohiuddin underscore the severe challenges faced by pilgrims in Mecca this year. The Assam community mourns these losses deeply and prays for the safety and well-being of all pilgrims still in Mecca.
