APDCL Proposes Power Tariff Hike

Guwahati: The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has chosen to increase the per unit tariffs of energy, which has slammed Assamese citizens with another price increase.

According to reports, APDCL has decided to increase its energy rates by an additional Rs 0.79 per unit.

The increased tariffs will be in effect for three months but from December through February.

It has emerged that the rate increase was declared in order to pay for the expense of gasoline and energy imports.

This comes after APDCL acknowledged in September that there were inconsistencies in consumers’ monthly electricity payments, claiming that while minor abnormalities had existed in the past, they had just recently become apparent.

Addressing the media at Bijulee Bhawan in Guwahati, APDCL Customer Relations Advisor Abhijit Sarma Barua had said that the business was ready to accept customer complaints in that regard.

Customers were further advised by the power distribution firm to come forward and file complaints if they discovered errors on their bills.

The senior official responded to questions by saying that there could be a number of causes for the sudden increase in monthly dues, some of which may be excessive usage of fans and air conditioners (ACs) during the summer, a problem with the metre readings, and so forth.

He also acknowledged mistakes made by firm personnel, claiming that some of them create bills based on estimates rather than actual readings from metre boxes.

Barua said, “The monthly bills of even our own employees have risen by around 10 per cent. The foremost reason for this hike is the excessive use of ACs during the summer months. The increase in general electricity tariff is due to excessive energy consumption.”

He said, “Considering hike in fuel prices for the Fuel and Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA), since September, there has been a hike of 30 paise per unit, which means without the discretion of customers, there has been a slight hike in electricity tariff.”
