Army Restrictions on Tourist Vehicles Cause Concern in Sikkim

Northeast Desk, 22nd March: Tourism stakeholders in the Dzuluk area and along the JN Road in Sikkim are raising concerns over the Army’s refusal to allow tourist vehicles despite proper permits from the concerned authority. With the peak tourist season in full swing, stakeholders fear that the restrictions will lead to disappointment among tourists who have traveled from afar and already made payments for their visits.

Expressing their frustration, one protester stated, “This is the peak tourist season in Sikkim, and if the army doesn’t allow tourist vehicles to ply, then we have to face a situation where tourists who come from very far away won’t be able to visit the places. They are disappointed, and we have already received payment also.”

In response to the situation, IG Checkpost ST Bhutia shared, “We need to ascertain why the Army is not allowing vehicles. After understanding the issue, we will contact the GOC and try to resolve the matter.”

Tourism stakeholders have decided to file a written police complaint to expedite action during this peak tourist season. Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Indo-China border pass, and adjoining areas are renowned tourist destinations, falling under Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and Protected Area Permit (PAP). Tourist vehicles are allowed only after obtaining a special permit from the state permit cell, but the Army’s restrictions are causing inconvenience to tourists and stakeholders alike.
