In a sucessful operation browned by Maibela Army Camp recently thwarted a recruitment drive by ULFA(I) and rescued four youth from Sivsagar District. Working on input received regarding recruitment drive being planned by ULFA(I) in Upper Assam through various linkmen, youths from different districts having been contacted for joining the insurgent group and being taken to Nagaland, the rescue operation was launched by Army jointly with Charaideo and Sivsagar Police.
Inputs were also received about presence of some youth in a house in Namsai and planned to be taken for recruitment as cadres and thus Operation Rescue was launched jointly by Army and Assam Police to rescue the youths. The suspect house was identified and kept under close watch and after positive confirmation the house was cordoned. Taking assistance of VDP and local Gaon Budha the owner was called out of the house and interrogated who confirmed presence of four individuals and weapons since past three days at his house.
He also revealed that the group had been led by an individual who had left rations and weapons and informed that he will be coming back. However the individual didn’t turn up even after passage of three days and he had also threatened the house owner of dire consequences in case he reports the matter to anyone. A recovery of two rifles and rations left by the linkman were recovered, the rescued youth are between 15-18 years of age and belong to Charideo and Jorhat Districts.
The successful operation has dealt a severe blow to the insurgent group ULFA(I) which is striving hard to revive itself in Upper Assam. Sources have revealed that Security Forces are now focussing on identifying and apprehending the linkmen who were involved with this recruitment drive. The rescued individuals are being counselled and encouraged to join the mainstream.
