Around 100 houses damaged as heavy rain triggers landslides in Sikkim

National Desk, 19 June: Around hundred houses and several bridges were damaged in West Sikkim district as torrential rain triggered multiple landslides in the state.

According to reports, the downpour created flash floods along the upper levels of the College Khola Valley causing maximum impact at Simphok where a significant bridge was swept away.

According to the officials, residences and roads were damaged in the Dentam Sub Division inside the Gyalshing district as a result of the landslides. Livestock and agricultural land have both been impacted. In Lower Sapung, a suspension bridge that crossed College Khola had also been destroyed by mudslides.

According to the officials, people who were impacted received relief from the authorities and restoration work on the roads and bridges has already begun. On the morning of June 18, Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army successfully rescued 300 stranded tourists. Due to perilous landslides and barriers, these tourists became stranded in Lachung and Lachen.

The Striking Lion Division, Trishakti Corps were ready to continue their rescue efforts after working relentlessly to assist tourists the day before. By 11 AM, all 300 visitors had been successfully led across a makeshift bridge allowing them to continue on their way to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.

The Indian Army soldiers made sure that the stranded tourists had access to necessities like food, resting areas and medical care.
