Arrested ‘Imams’ confessed to being members of AQIS
Guwahati: In a sensational revelation, the superintendent of police, Goalpara, Rakesh Reddy said on Saturday that two “imams” detained in Goalpara district had a direct connection to Morigaon jihadist Mufti Mustafa and others arrested in Barpeta district.
Speaking to the media, SP Reddy stated, “We have discovered their active ties with Barpeta and Morigaon modules of AQIS/Ansarullah Bangla Team(ABT) during interrogation. They were active in giving now-fugitive Bangladeshi nationals logistical support and shelter. They admitted to belonging to AQIS and enlisting Ansars/Sleeper Cells.
Additionally, it was disclosed that they held a Dharma Sabha in December 2019 at the Sundarpur Tilapara Madrassa, which is overseen by the Matia Police Station, where numerous Bangladeshis with ties to Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) were invited to speak as guests.
Two people were detained by the Goalpara police on Saturday as a result of information about their affiliation with Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
The arrested persons were identified as Abdus Subhan (Imam of Tinkunia Shantipur Masjid) son of Idris Ali (Age-43), Village- Rakyasani, Part I, PS-Mornoi and Jalaluddin Sheikh (Imam of Tilapara Natun Masjid) son of Abbu Bakkar Ali (Age 49), Village- Gopalpur, Tilapara, PS- Matia.
Many pieces of evidence relating to AQIS, Jihadi literature, posters, books, and other documents, as well as mobile phones, SIM cards, and ID cards, were recovered during home searches of the aforementioned suspects.
As a result, under section 120(B)/121/121(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and RW sections 18/18(B)/19/20 UA(P) Act, a new case has been filed at Matia PS Case No: 105/22 and is currently being investigated.
