Arrested Officials Produced Before Court Today in GMC Scam

Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) employees who were arrested in relation to a scam were brought before the court on Wednesday after being held for five days.

Eight people, including the OSD of GMC and six Executive Engineers, were detained by the Special Vigilance Cell of Assam on Friday (October 21) in connection with a multi-million rupee forgery scandal at GMC.

The arrested persons are Babulal Sarma, OSD, GMC; Executive Engineers of GMC Ashif Ahmed, Shankar Medhi, Ramakanta Saikia, Alin Begum, Chittaranjan Dutta, Hiranya Barman and Dinesh Jaiswal, Director of Dinsan Global Venture Pvt Ltd.

The court will also hear testimony from a chartered accountant who was also detained in this case.

Meanwhile, the CM’s Vigilance Cell has not requested detention of these eight cops once more.

A preliminary inquiry by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell in Assam revealed various irregularities and illegalities in the way the GMC carried out de-siltation operations, which involved a private company by the name of Dinsan Global Venture Pvt. Ltd. The aforementioned company withdrew government monies and presented bills for numerous crores of rupees using fraudulent weighbridge slips.
