Arunachal: Anglo-Wancho War of 1875 Honored at Oriah Golden Jubilee Celebrations
Longding: The heroic resistance of Wancho warriors against British colonial forces took center stage at the Oriah Golden Jubilee celebrations, where state officials unveiled an exhibition documenting the historic Anglo-Wancho War of 1875. The event marked the 150th anniversary of the Ninu Massacre, a defining moment in Arunachal Pradesh’s history.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu, in a tribute to the Wancho warriors, hailed their bravery and unyielding spirit. “The Ninu Massacre remains a testament to the indomitable courage of the Wancho warriors, who stood against colonial oppression to defend their land,” Khandu stated on social media.
The exhibition features artefacts, historical records, and accounts from the 1875 conflict, shedding light on one of northeastern India’s earliest organized revolts against British expansion. Historians emphasize that despite facing a superior military force, the Wancho resistance played a crucial role in preserving indigenous customs and territorial sovereignty.
Held as part of the Oriah festival, the event not only celebrates the cultural heritage of the Wancho community but also serves as a reminder of their ancestors’ valor. The exhibition has drawn significant interest from scholars, students, and tribal leaders, ensuring that the legacy of the Anglo-Wancho War continues to inspire future generations.
