Arunachal Capital Police Apprehends Akashdeep Murder and Rape Case Prime Accused
Northeast Desk, 21st January: In a significant development, Arunachal Capital Police, under the leadership of Senior Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh, announced the capture of Mujibur Rahman, the primary suspect in the gruesome 2008 Akashdeep murder and rape case involving two sisters. Rahman, who had evaded authorities since his escape from Jully Jail in 2012, was apprehended following an extensive operation.
The tragic incident unfolded on June 12, 2008, in the heart of Itanagar, as Arunachal Pradesh was rocked by the horrifying double murder of Leki Pema, 20, and Rinchin Pema, 26. The sisters, owners of the Natural Beauty Parlour at Akashdweep Market Complex, were discovered brutally murdered, likely having endured sexual assault.
During a press briefing, SSP Rohit Rajbir Singh disclosed that Mujibur Rahman’s escape in 2012 had kept him on the run. Designated as a proclaimed offender in the Akashdeep case and facing multiple charges in Assam, Rahman’s arrest signifies a breakthrough in the decade-long pursuit of justice.
SSP Rohit Rajbir Singh expressed, “The relentless efforts of the Arunachal Capital Police have finally paid off with the arrest of Mujibur Rahman. This arrest not only marks a crucial milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families but also serves as a testament to the dedication of our law enforcement agencies.”
The initial 2008 investigation, led by the then Superintendent of Police of Papum Pare district, Hibu Tamanag, unveiled the brutality of the crime. The bodies of the sisters were found inside their beauty parlour and residence. Tamanag had confirmed, “The two sisters were probably raped before they were murdered around 3 in the morning.”
Now in custody, Rahman is expected to face trial for his alleged involvement in the 2008 Akashdeep case. The police will also delve into his escape from Jully Jail and subsequent criminal activities during his years on the run.
