Arunachal Celebrates National Doctors’ Day with Tributes, Cultural Festivities, and a New Medical College Announcement
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh joined the rest of the country in celebrating National Doctors’ Day with a grand state-level event in Itanagar, themed “Caring for Caretakers.” The occasion paid tribute to the state’s healthcare professionals while also marking a significant announcement aimed at bolstering the state’s medical infrastructure.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu graced the celebration as Chief Guest, accompanied by Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge and Health Advisor Dr. Mohesh Chai. The event, jointly organised by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Arunachal Pradesh and the Arunachal Pradesh Doctors’ Association (APDA), took place at Waii International Hotel and brought together members of the medical community, government officials, and the public.
The ceremony began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and the recitation of the Hippocratic Oath, followed by a medley of cultural performances, including group songs, traditional dances, and a prize distribution ceremony for sports competition winners.
In his address, Chief Minister Khandu expressed deep gratitude for the resilience and commitment of the state’s doctors, especially those working in remote and challenging areas. Acknowledging their indispensable role in society, he announced the establishment of a new medical college in West Kameng district—a move aimed at improving access to quality medical education and healthcare services in the region. The announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, reflecting broad support for the initiative.
The event also honoured retired doctors and healthcare NGOs for their long-standing service to the state’s medical sector. Their recognition served as a reminder of the enduring impact of compassionate, lifelong medical service.
Speaking to the media, Health Minister Biyuram Wahge underscored the selflessness with which doctors serve the community, often at the cost of their own personal lives. He appealed to society to acknowledge and celebrate the tireless efforts of healthcare workers, especially in regions with difficult terrain and limited infrastructure.
National Doctors’ Day is observed annually on July 1 to commemorate the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a legendary physician and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. His legacy continues to inspire generations of doctors across the country.
The celebration in Arunachal Pradesh not only honoured that legacy but also reflected the state’s renewed commitment to healthcare growth, community appreciation, and the nurturing of future medical professionals.
