Arunachal Elevates Probe into Ex-MLA Yumsen Matey’s Murder, Transfers Case to NIA

Northeast Desk, 22nd December: In a resolute move, the Arunachal Pradesh government has decided to transfer the investigation of the murder case involving former MLA Yumsen Matey to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Deputy Home Secretary Likha Sampu confirmed this decision, highlighting the gravity of the case.

Yumsen Matey, a notable figure and the Ollo community’s first graduate, was fatally shot by unidentified assailants on December 15th at Lazu circle in Tirap district, near the Indo-Myanmar border. Registered as Lazu PS FIR No. 10/2023, the case has ignited shock and calls for a comprehensive inquiry.

Matey, who served as an MLA for the 56th Khonsa West Constituency, had a political journey that included a tenure as a Congress legislator after his 2009 election and later affiliations with the BJP post-2014. His untimely demise has not only shaken the state but has also sparked demands for a thorough investigation into the incident and the broader issue of insurgency in the Tirap-Changlang-Longding (TCL) region.

Deputy Home Secretary Likha Sampu conveyed the state’s proposal to transfer the case to the NIA, emphasizing the need for a meticulous and unbiased investigation. The Arunachal Pradesh Home Department has formally communicated this transfer request to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

The decision to involve the NIA in the investigation is perceived as a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by the opposition and the public. It reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety of leaders in the region and seeking a lasting resolution to insurgency challenges. The move aims to bring the perpetrators to justice and provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Yumsen Matey’s tragic demise.
