Arunachal: Elusive Namdapha Flying Squirrel Rediscovered After 42 Years

Northeast Desk, 22nd December: In a remarkable rediscovery, the critically endangered Namdapha flying squirrel (Biswamoyopterus biswasi) has emerged from the shadows in the dense forests of Arunachal Pradesh, India.

Last officially recorded in 1981 within Namdapha National Park, this nocturnal arboreal species, distinguished by its reddish, grizzled fur and gliding membrane, has eluded detection for four decades.

The recent sighting highlights the rich biodiversity of the region and emphasizes the need for robust conservation measures to protect this species listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and under the highest protection category in the Wildlife Protection Act of India.

The rediscovery serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving diverse species and their habitats.
