Arunachal Faces Severe Flooding and Landslides Amidst Incessant Rainfall

Northeast Desk, 2nd July: In the wake of relentless rainfall triggering landslides and floods across Arunachal Pradesh, Oken Tayeng, MLA of the 39th Mebo Assembly Constituency, accompanied by East Siang district’s Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu, conducted a visit to assess the situation in the region.

The assessment team, which included Additional Deputy Commissioner Sibo Pasing, District Disaster Management Officer T. Tashi, Monggu Banggo ZPM Gumin Tayeng, and local Gaon Burahs, visited flood-affected areas on July 1st to evaluate the extent of damage caused by the ongoing natural calamity.

Heavy rainfall has resulted in extensive flooding of the Siang River and several smaller rivers, disrupting road communications and causing damage to electrical infrastructure. This has led to power outages in Lower Mebo villages like Seram, Kongkul, Agam, Namsing, Gadum-I, Gadum-II, and Mer in East Siang district, as well as in villages such as Banggo, Paglam, Keba, Tini Ali, Kebang, Kaling-I, and Kaling-II in Dambuk Sub-Division, Lower Dibang Valley district.

The Mebo-Dhola road near Kadang River, between Ngopok and Motum Tin-ali, suffered disruption, with the alternate culvert washed away, necessitating public use of the Ngopok-Siluk-Mebo route. The main bridge over Kadang Korong is currently under maintenance and is expected to reopen to the public after July 15th.

MLA Oken Tayeng, after assessing the flood-affected areas, reported significant losses, including the washing away of hectares of land and damage to agricultural crops due to the overflow of the Siang River and waterlogging.

Officials have cautioned the public to exercise caution near the Siang River, emphasizing the risks posed by the ongoing flooding and the consequential land erosion.

In response to the crisis, Army personnel from Likabali and Sigar military stations have been actively engaged, establishing rescue camps at the Tarotamak river bank between Namsing and Gadum village over the past three days.

The situation remains critical as authorities continue to monitor and respond to the unfolding disaster in Arunachal Pradesh.
