Arunachal: Five people arrested for allegedly raping 13-year-old girl for 5 days in Daporijo

Northeast, August 18, 2024 — Five people have been taken into custody by the Arunachal Pradesh police in relation to the reported rape and imprisonment of a 13-year-old girl in Daporijo’s Gandhi market area.The alleged accused has been identified as Bai Kaji, Tapong Baring, Raju Lomdak, Jepu Leya alias Jack Sorum, and Nanesh Nayam.

Thutan Jamba, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Daporijo, claims that the victim was detained and sexually assaulted for five days at Gandhi Market. After the victim’s sister filed a complaint on July 28, the incident became public knowledge.

The Superintendent of Police stated, “Based on the FIR, a case was registered under Sections 137(2), 70(2), 3(5) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of POCSO Act at Daporijo police station.”

Moreover, the police reported that the victim had been rescued, examined by a doctor, and given to her parents.

“All five accused are currently in judicial custody after their police remand expired,” the SP continued.

“One of the prime accused was arrested on the day the FIR was filed, while the others were arrested on July 29, 2024.”

The police have issued an appeal for the public to come forward and report any such incidents. The victim and her family have been provided with relief by the prompt action of the police.”
