Arunachal Forest Department Clarifies Controversial Market Seizure

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change has officially addressed the recent uproar surrounding the confiscation of local herbs, organic vegetables, and river fish from Itanagar’s Gandhi Market.

The clarification comes after videos circulated online depicting a Magistrate, accompanied by police and forest personnel, seizing traditionally consumed forest produce.

The department explicitly stated that the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 does not grant authority to any individual to seize such items unless they are classified as Scheduled plant species.

Crucially, the Forest Department confirmed that none of the confiscated goods were protected or endangered, highlighting the undue hardship caused to the local populace by the action.

Furthermore, the department denied directing or authorizing the seizure and has demanded explanations from the Deputy Chief Wildlife Warden and the Arunachal Pradesh State Biodiversity Board concerning the involvement of forest staff and Shri Nabam Regum, Chairperson of the Papum Pare District Biodiversity Management Committee, who was reportedly influential in the seizure.

Addressing separate allegations of fish seizures by Shri Regum based on wildlife protection, the department clarified that traditional fishing in rivers and water bodies outside protected zones is not illegal.

The department underscored that it has not empowered any individual to conduct such enforcement regarding traditional fishing practices.

The Forest Department firmly reiterated that the Wildlife Act’s protection measures are specific to certain species and areas, and the traditional food practices of local communities should not be targeted without legitimate legal basis.

The department concluded by assuring the public that investigations are ongoing and that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.
