Arunachal: Forest Department Intensifies Night Patrols at Pakke Tiger Reserve Following Poaching Incident

Northeast Desk, 18th May: The Forest Department has significantly increased night patrolling in the core zones and fringe areas of the Pakke Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. This action follows a concerning incident involving illegal poachers, as reported in an official statement released on Saturday.

The enhanced security measures were initiated after four unidentified individuals were discovered illegally collecting frogs at Takosinyi pond, located about 20 kilometers from the Rilloh Range office, on May 15. The incident was reported by Range Forest Officer Talo Dibo, who led the patrolling team.

“Patrolling has been intensified to combat illegal fishing and the hunting of wild birds and animals within the Rilloh Wildlife Range headquarters,” Dibo stated. “Our efforts also aim to raise awareness among the local community about the importance of wildlife conservation.”

When the patrolling team arrived at the scene, they encountered the poachers, who were armed with a .22 rifle and a 12-bore SBBL gun. The suspects managed to flee into the forest under the cover of night. Despite their escape, the team recovered significant evidence, including two local backpacks, two machetes, three live cartridges for the 12-bore SBBL gun, and a roasted Giant Black Squirrel.

The Forest Department’s intensified patrolling efforts reflect a strong commitment to protecting the wildlife within Pakke Tiger Reserve and ensuring that illegal activities are swiftly addressed.
