Arunachal: Former MLA Brutally Murdered; Killers Allegedly Flee to Myanmar

Northeast Desk, 17th December: In a shocking turn of events, the perpetrators behind the heinous murder of former MLA Yumsem Matey from Arunachal’s Khonsa West constituency are reported to have escaped to Myanmar. The tragic incident unfolded on December 16, following the abduction of the ex-legislator from a social function in Raho village at Laju Chakra, Arunachal Pradesh.

Preliminary reports suggest that Matey was forcefully taken to the border area, where he met a brutal demise at the hands of his assailants. Suspicions point towards militant involvement in this horrifying crime, raising concerns about the security situation in the region.

Yumsem Matey, a prominent political figure hailing from Lazu Village and belonging to the OLLO community in Tirap District, served as a member of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly from Khonsa West. Affiliated with the Indian National Congress, Matey made history as the first graduate from the OLLO Community in BA.Hons.in History in 1992–93, graduating from Government College, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

His dedicated service extended beyond politics, as he also served as the District Adult Education Officer (DAEO) in Changlang District. Elected as MLA from the 56th Khonsa West Assembly Constituency in 2009, Matey held the position of Parliamentary Secretary for the Department of Women and Social Welfare, Social Justice and Tribal Affairs, and DOTCL (Department of Tirap, Changlang and Longding).
