Arunachal Governor Launches Book ‘Kargil War: The Turning Point’ in Bengaluru

Northeast Desk, 4th July: On July 3, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. General KT Parnaik launched the book ‘Kargil War: The Turning Point’ at Cariappa Hall, Rajendra Singhji Army Officers Institute (RSAOI), Bengaluru. The book, authored by the late Col M B Ravindranath, Vir Chakra (VrC), former Commanding Officer of the 2nd battalion of Rajputana Rifles (2 RAJ RIF), reflects the institute’s camaraderie and the spirit of bonhomie among forces.

The book provides an in-depth account of the battalion’s actions and operations from May to July 1999 during Operation Vijay. Governor Parnaik, who also commanded the 2nd battalion of Rajputana Rifles from 1990-93, praised Col Ravindranath’s detailed narration of the Indian Army’s valor and élan. He acknowledged the contributions of Anitha Ravindranath, the late Colonel’s wife, and the officers of 2 RAJ RIF in bringing out this publication.

Governor Parnaik, who was on a UN Mission in Angola during the Kargil War, emphasized that the book offers a firsthand report from the warzone, showcasing the acumen and gallantry of the regiment’s officers and troops. He highlighted the book’s exploration of leadership nuances and psychological aspects of warfare, recommending its inclusion in school and college libraries to inspire future armed forces aspirants.

The battalion played a crucial role in capturing the strategic Tololing feature in the Drass Sector on June 12-13, 1999, marking the first significant success of the Indian Army during Operation Vijay.

The book launch was attended by the First Lady of the State, Anagha Parnaik, Lt Gen Mohinder Puri (Retd.), Ms. Anitha Ravindranath, Col D Devasahayam (Retd.), CMD Radiant Group, along with former Service Chiefs.

‘Kargil War: The Turning Point’ comprises 12 chapters detailing the events from the initial intrusions in May 1999, the battalion’s movement from Kigam to Drass, troop preparations and training, to the planning and execution of attacks on Tololing on June 13 and Three Pimples on June 28, 1999. The book vividly describes the combat challenges and highlights the exceptional artillery fire support that was pivotal in the operation.
