Arunachal: Hangpan Dada Memorial Tournament Concludes, Spotlighting Sporting Excellence and Heroic Legacy

Itanagar: The Hangpan Dada Memorial State-Level Volleyball and Football Tournament reached its grand finale with a vibrant closing ceremony.

The event was honored by the presence of OC BRTF Chandan, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Beyond the thrilling displays of athletic prowess, the tournament served as a poignant tribute to the valor of martyr Havildar Hangpan Dada, the esteemed recipient of India’s Ashok Chakra.

During the ceremony, Deputy Commissioner Talo Jerang commended the young athletes for their exceptional skill, unwavering dedication, and exemplary sportsmanship throughout the competition. He extended his heartfelt congratulations to both the victorious teams and all participants. In a significant announcement, he revealed that talented players identified during the tournament will have the prestigious opportunity to represent Upper Siang district in the upcoming state-level championship scheduled to be held in Pasighat, East Siang district.

Deputy Commissioner Jerang emphasized the profound significance of the annual tournament, articulating that it “not only commemorates the bravery of martyr Hangpan Dada but also fosters youth development through sports.” He highlighted the dual purpose of the event: honoring a fallen hero while nurturing the potential of the region’s young sporting talents.

The final matches of the tournament delivered intense excitement across both football and volleyball disciplines. In the boys’ football final, Mariyang emerged victorious after a nail-biting penalty shootout, edging out Tuting with a score of 3–1. The girls’ football final mirrored this dramatic conclusion, with Mariyang once again claiming the championship title by narrowly defeating Yingkiong 3–2 on penalties. In the boys’ volleyball category, Tuting showcased their prowess by triumphing over Mariyang. The girls’ volleyball final witnessed a hard-fought battle, ultimately resulting in Yingkiong overcoming Geku in a tightly contested match.

The deserving winners in each category were awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with trophies, while the runners-up received Rs 25,000 and trophies in recognition of their achievements. Individual brilliance on the field was also celebrated with Best Player Awards, each carrying a cash prize of Rs 10,000. In football, Geyon Yompang and Ponung Medo were recognized for their outstanding performances, while in volleyball, the Best Player awards went to Gegap Osik and Miti Libang.

The prize distribution ceremony was graced by the presence of several distinguished individuals, including SP Token Saring, DMO Dr. Gepeng Litin, DDSE Duhon Tekseng, DAEO Norbu Tsering, EAC Binti Mibang (DSO in-charge), SHG member Mekam Nopi, and APWWS General Secretary Kosiang Pangkam. These dignitaries collectively encouraged the young athletes to continue pursuing excellence in their sporting endeavors.

The Hangpan Dada Memorial Tournament stands as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Havildar Hangpan Dada. On May 26, 2016, while engaged in a fierce battle against terrorists in Naugam, Jammu and Kashmir, Havildar Dada displayed unparalleled bravery by eliminating four terrorists at an altitude of 13,000 feet before tragically succumbing to his injuries. His exceptional act of valor was posthumously recognized with the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.

Born on October 2, 1979, Havildar Hangpan Dada served the nation with unwavering dedication in various postings, including Barrackpore, Kargil, Lucknow, and Multuk (Manipur). He is survived by his wife, Chasen Lowang, his daughter, Roukhin, and his son, Senwang. On January 26, 2017, his widow, Chasen Lowang, received the Ashok Chakra on his behalf from the President of India. Organized annually in May, the Hangpan Dada Memorial Tournament serves as a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy, inspiring future generations through the spirit of sportsmanship and remembrance of his supreme sacrifice.
