Arunachal: Itanagar District Tobacco Control Cell Cracks Down on Illegal Tobacco Sales Near Schools
Northeast Desk, 9th May: In a proactive effort to combat the illicit sale of tobacco products near educational institutions, the Flying Squad of the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) in Itanagar conducted a surprise checking drive in the Nitivihar and Senkipark areas on May 8th.
Under the leadership of EAC Itanagar, Shri Khoda Lasa, and the District Consultant of DTCC, along with local police personnel, the operation targeted shops situated in close proximity to schools. Operating within the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) sections 6(a) and 6(b), the squad conducted raids on various establishments.
During the inspections, a significant quantity of cigarettes, other tobacco products, and illegally sold alcohol were seized from several shops located within a 100-meter radius of educational institutions.
Following the raids, shop owners found in violation of COTPA Section 6 (a) and (b) were issued challans amounting to Rs 200 each. Additionally, they received stern warnings against any future sale of tobacco products near schools. Emphasis was placed on the importance of adhering to COTPA regulations to create a tobacco-free environment and safeguard the well-being of youth.
To underscore the seriousness of the issue, all seized items were ceremoniously burnt and disposed of at the Office of EAC Itanagar, marking the conclusion of the surprise checking operation. This decisive action by the Itanagar DTCC serves as a strong deterrent against the illegal sale of tobacco products near educational institutions, reinforcing the commitment to promoting a healthy and tobacco-free environment for the community.
