Arunachal: Life-Saving Angioplasty Procedure Marks Milestone at TRIHMS

Northeast Desk, 3rd June: In a remarkable medical feat, a team of cardiologists at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) successfully conducted an emergency angioplasty procedure, rescuing the life of a 61-year-old diabetic male. The patient, hailing from Arunachal Pradesh to visit his son serving in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), experienced chest pain in the evening, prompting immediate medical attention.

Initially admitted to Rama Krishna Mission Hospital (RKM), he was swiftly diagnosed with an inferior wall myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. Recognizing the critical nature of the situation, he was promptly referred to TRIHMS for specialized care.

Upon arrival at TRIHMS, the patient underwent thrombolysis with streptokinase (STK) but unfortunately progressed into cardiogenic shock, necessitating urgent intervention. Led by Dr. Rinchin Dorjee Megeji and Dr. Tony Ete, the medical team acted swiftly, implanting a temporary pacemaker (TPI) and proceeding with a primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) procedure.

Encountering complications including ventricular tachycardia (VT) and cardiac arrest, the team adeptly administered defibrillator shocks and initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Despite challenges, they successfully performed angiography, revealing significant occlusion in the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and near-total blockage in the right coronary artery (RCA).

Through meticulous ballooning and stenting, the team managed to restore blood flow, albeit amidst further VT episodes. The procedure, which commenced at midnight, concluded by 1 am on June 2, marking the first successful primary angioplasty at TRIHMS and in Arunachal Pradesh.

The dedicated medical team, comprising Dr. Sindu Damde, Margo Bagra, Mukhtarul Ali, Karnu Poyom, and Sandhya, demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment, underscoring TRIHMS’s dedication to advancing cardiac care and saving lives in the region.
