Arunachal: Lohit Police Nab Drug Peddler, Seize Heroin in Forest Raid
Itanagar: In a significant crackdown on the burgeoning drug trade, the Lohit District Police in Arunachal Pradesh successfully apprehended an individual and confiscated 19.8 grams of suspected heroin. The operation unfolded in the secluded Paya forest region, nestled between Sunpura and Tezu, reaffirming the force’s unwavering commitment to stamping out narcotics from the region.
Acting swiftly on a confidential intelligence input, a dedicated squad from Sunpura Police Station, spearheaded by the vigilant Inspector D. Singpho, alongside SI (SG) Sanja Kumar, ASI (SG) P. Morang, ASI (SG) M. Lego, Constable Driver Y. Mindo, Constable L. Manwai, and Constable N. Tangha, strategically intercepted a suspicious motorcycle. The two-wheeler, a Splendor bearing registration number AS-23W-3708, was believed to be a conduit for illicit drug transportation.
A thorough search, meticulously conducted in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and two impartial witnesses, led to the discovery of the contraband. The 19.8 grams of suspected heroin were cleverly stashed away in two soap cases, a common modus operandi for drug couriers. The accused has been identified as Ran Bahadur Tamang, son of Chin Bdr. Tamang, hailing from 9 Mile Abbar Gaon, Lekhapani, in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
A formal case has been registered at Sunpura Police Station under the stringent sections 21(b)/27(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigations are currently in full swing to unearth the wider network and bring all perpetrators to justice.
The Lohit Police have been relentless in their pursuit of drug offenders, significantly ramping up their operations across the district. Since the dawn of 2025, the district police have lodged five NDPS cases, leading to the arrest of eight individuals. In these ongoing efforts, over 40 grams of heroin and a substantial 500 grams of opium have been seized, underscoring the authorities’ resolute stance against the drug menace and their dedication to safeguarding public well-being.
