Arunachal Man Arrested in Uttarakhand for Extorting College Student with Obscene Videos and Photos
Northeast Desk, 8th June: In a significant breakthrough, a man was arrested from Uttarakhand for threatening and extorting a college girl from Arunachal Pradesh using her obscene videos and photos. The accused was using a fake Facebook account to carry out his malicious activities.
On May 7, 2024, a female student from IGG College lodged a complaint at PS Tezu, reporting that an unknown individual had created a fake Facebook account in her name. The perpetrator used this account to send threats to her real Facebook account, demanding money via a QR code and threatening to upload her obscene videos and photos on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram if she did not comply. The victim suspected that the obscene content was recorded through a ventilator or holes in the ceiling of her rental room in Tezu.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police promptly initiated an enquiry. A case was registered as Tezu PS Case No 33/2024 under sections 354(c), 384, and 506 of the IPC and assigned to SI Jugli for investigation. The victim, supported by the Mishmi Welfare Society (Youth Wing), also approached SSP Tezu, expressing her distress and fear of societal backlash if the content was leaked online.
The victim had already transferred Rs 4000 to the accused via the provided QR code. Leveraging technical surveillance and local sources, the police identified the accused’s mobile number and tracked his location to Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The accused was identified as Juntu Koyu from Jeko village, Lohit District, Arunachal Pradesh. The bank account linked to the QR code and the corresponding mobile number were traced to a local shopkeeper in Dehradun.
On May 28, 2024, SI Jugli and two constables traveled to Dehradun. With assistance from the local police at PS Prem Nagar, Dehradun, they located the accused at his female friend’s rental room. He was apprehended in an early morning operation on May 29 and brought back to PS Tezu on a transit remand issued by the CJM, Dehradun.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to recording the obscene videos through a ceiling hole and extorting Rs 4000 from the victim using the fake Facebook account. He also admitted to committing similar crimes previously. The accused has been sent to judicial custody, and additional charges will be added to the charge sheet.
SSP Lohit, Shri T Amo, IPS, commended SI Jugli and his team for their swift action and successful resolution of the case, which helped the victim overcome her severe depression.
